Flooring vs. Carpet

Choosing carpeting or another type of flooring is sometimes tough, especially if this is your first time remodeling or building your home. For many people, cost is the main factor that drives the choice; however, there are many other factors that come into play when picking a type of flooring for your home.

Why you may prefer carpet

Carpet has a few advantages over flooring. For one, it makes for a more comfortable experience. Walking over carpet feels better. It is also better suited for homes where there are children playing on the floor because it acts as a cushion. Carpet also absorbs noise and prevents falls and slipping. It works as an insulator, making you home warmer in the winter months.

Disadvantages of carpet

Carpet does have loops that get pulled out, resulting in damage. It also soils easily, which is especially important when choosing light colors, or when there are kids involved.

Why you may prefer flooring

The main advantage of flooring like tile, wood or laminate is that it is easily repaired. It does not collect as much dust as carpet, so it is great for people with allergies.

Disadvantages of flooring

Of course, flooring is not without its downfalls. Wood floors can expand when the weather is humid. They also get slippery when wet, or result in splinters once they wear down. Tile can chip and laminate wears down.

Keep these positive and negative aspects of carpet and flooring in mind when making a decision. In the end, the right choice depends on which features you value the most.
